Fantasy Football QB Start/Sit Rankings (Week 12)

*Rankings with detailed comments will be available Friday. Any additional updates that are necessary will be posted no later than Saturday in the final Week 12 (2009) rankings.
1. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – He managed to live up to his billing as our top ranked fantasy QB for week 12 with a stellar Turkey Day effort against Detroit. Rodgers threw for an impressive 348 yards with 3 TDs and no interceptions. He is a must start fantasy option each and every week.
2. Peyton Manning (IND) – While he was fairly unspectacular by Peyton Manning standards in his week 9 meeting with Houston, his overall track record against the Texans is exemplary. In addition, Manning rarely if ever puts up average numbers against a team twice in the same season. At the very least, this is a fail safe match up against a very average pass defense. Manning has been hampered by a glute injury this week, but he is expected to play and we seriously doubt a strained “butt” muscle will have much, if any, effect on his play. Check injury report: glute (probable, full practice Friday)
3. Tom Brady (NE) – It may not be an ideal match up for Brady in week 12 against a stingy Saints pass defense, but this game should turn into a shootout through the air and Brady tends to thrive in such match ups. New Orleans has yet to face a truly potent passing attack all season and they will face one of the best in the NFL in week 12. Start the red hot Brady with confidence as usual and expect no less than solid results.
4. Drew Brees (NO) – On paper, a week 12 match up against a very solid Patriots pass defense does not bode extremely well, but Brees is not your average signal caller and a similarly talented Peyton Manning torched the New England secondary just a couple of weeks ago. In addition, this game is likely to turn into a shootout through the air which typically translates into big fantasy points for QBs.
5. Brett Favre (MIN) – In 5 home games this season, Favre has been near flawless, averaging 283 yards per game with 13 TDs and just 1 interception. That bodes extremely well considering Favre’s week 12 match up against a mediocre Bears pass defense is at home. There are only 5 teams in the NFL that have given up more TDs via the passing game than Chicago and the Bears give up the 11th most fantasy points to opposing QBs. At the very least, expect solid production from Favre with this favorable match up at home.
6. Phillip Rivers (SD) – While Rivers can be inconsistent at times, the odds of him being off of his game in week 12 are slim to none. In his last 3 games against Kansas City, Rivers is averaging 310 passing yards per game with no less than 2 TDs in any of those contests. In a week 7 meeting with the Chiefs, Rivers threw for 268 yards with 3 TDs and 0 interceptions. The Chiefs rank just 28th in the NFL in pass defense and they have been very generous to opposing QBs all season. Logic and the numbers alike suggest a very promising week for the talented signal caller and Rivers is a must start fantasy option.

7. Kurt Warner (ARI) – He was having yet another stellar fantasy day in week 11 against St. Louis before getting his bell rung and having to pre-maturely leave the game. The good news is that Warner has been cleared to play in week 12 against Tennessee and based on his numbers of late, we expect him to play very well. While the Titans have shown considerable improvement against the pass over their last few games, they are still vulnerable and the potent Cardinals passing attack should prove to be more than they can handle. It is safe to insert Warner into week 12 fantasy line ups with confidence. Check injury report: head (very questionable)
8. Matt Schaub (HOU) – It has only been 3 weeks since he last faced the Colts. In that week 9 contest, Schaub threw 2 interceptions, but the good news is that he set a precedent for potential success against the Indy defense by throwing for 311 yards and a TD in that game. He has also set a solid precedent for success in general by averaging close to 300 yards and 2 TDs per game so far this season. The match up isn’t extremely favorable against a fairly solid Colts pass defense, but for obvious reasons, we like Schaub’s chances for a strong performance at home in week 12.
9. Carson Palmer (CIN) – He has had some very shaky performances throughout the season and it is safe to say that Palmer has underachieved from a fantasy standpoint. That said, you have to like his chances against the Browns in week 12. Cleveland ranks just 26th in the NFL against the pass and there are only 6 teams in the league that give up more fantasy points to opposing QBs on a weekly basis. In week 4, Palmer totaled 250 yards and threw for 2 TDs against them in Cleveland. It seems logical that he will fare even better against them this time around at home. Palmer should make for a solid starting option for week 12 fantasy line ups.
10. Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – He was forced to leave his week 11 match up against Kansas City a bit earlier than he would have liked with a slight concussion, but Big Ben had already inflicted plenty of damage in his own right, throwing for close to 400 yards and 3 scores in that contest. The good news is that he has been cleared to play in week 12 and while the match up isn’t ideal, Roethlisberger should be solid against a mediocre Ravens secondary that ranks just 17th in the NFL in pass defense. UPDATE: The latest report is that Roethlisberger has been experiencing headaches related to the concussion he suffered in week 11 and therefore, he will not play in week 12 against Baltimore. Check injury report: concussion (out for week 12)
11. Matt Ryan (ATL) – The struggling second year signal caller returned to form in week 11 against the Giants and a week 12 match up against Tampa Bay holds promise to keep him on the right track. Only 3 teams in the NFL have given up more fantasy production to opposing QBs than the Buccaneers. Ryan qualifies as a low end QB1 or high end QB2 with this favorable match up.

12. Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) – He has seen a steady decline in fantasy production over the last 4 weeks, but Hasselbeck should get back on track with a favorable week 12 match up against a shaky St. Louis pass defense. The Rams rank just 24th in the NFL in pass defense and rank in the top 5 in the league in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing QBs.
13. Alex Smith (SF) – There are safer fantasy options at the QB position for week 12, but we really like Smith’s chances against a road weary Jacksonville defense in this match up. The Jaguars have one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL and Smith has plenty of weapons to pick them apart.

14. Donovan McNabb (PHI) – McNabb is certainly capable of torching any defense he faces, but his track record against Washington over the last couple of seasons is fairly poor and the Skins currently rank 1st in the NFL in pass defense.
15. Tony Romo (DAL) – He was finally able to break out of a 3 game slump by torching a fairly solid Raiders pass defense on Thanksgiving Day. He threw for 309 yards with 2 TDs and no interceptions. While this was an encouraging performance, Romo will have his work cut out for him with tough match ups over the next few weeks.
16. Eli Manning (NYG) – He appeared to be back on track following a big week 11 performance against Atlanta, but it was not meant to be in week 12 as Manning struggled badly against a stout Denver defense on Turkey Day. He threw for 230 yards, but failed to throw a single TD pass while being picked off once and sacked 3 times. Manning’s fantasy value took a significant blow with this sub par performance.
17. Jay Cutler (CHI) – There is potential for success against a suspect Vikings secondary in week 12. Unfortunately, the potential for disaster is equally prevalent any time Cutler steps under center these days.
18. Vince Young (TEN) – He isn’t going to torch anyone, but the match up against Arizona at home is somewhat favorable and Young has four consecutive double digit fantasy performances to his credit.
19. David Garrard (JAC) – The week 12 match up against the 49ers has its favorable qualities, but Garrard’s performances in road games so far this season can best be described as lousy and he has been especially lousy in long distance road games.
20. Kyle Orton (DEN) – He was far from amazing on Thursday night against the Giants, but all things considered, Orton had a decent performance throwing for 245 yards, 1TD and 1 interception. At the very least, it was an encouraging effort heading into a promising week 13 match up against Kansas City.
21. Joe Flacco (BAL) – He is the kind of QB that can put up big numbers when you least expect it, but he hasn’t thrown a single TD pass since week 8 and a week 12 match up against Pittsburgh is less than favorable.
22. Ryan Fitzpatrick (BUF) – While Fitzpatrick is far from being a trustworthy fantasy option, there is some sleeper value here. Fitzpatrick finally got on the same page with Terrell Owens last week and if they can maintain that chemistry against a fairly generous Miami pass defense in week 12, it could be a productive afternoon for both players. That said, don’t bet the farm on it.
23. Matt Cassel (KC) – He has some strong fantasy performances to his credit this season, but week 7 against San Diego is far from being one of them. Cassel should fare better against the Chargers this time around, but your week 12 fantasy roster will likely be better off with him on the bench.
24. Josh Freeman (TB) – There is some potential for success against a suspect Falcons secondary in week 12, but the rookie signal caller is still a shaky fantasy play and a long shot to do any real damage.
25. Jason Campbell (WAS) –You may be surprised to know that Campbell had his 2nd best fantasy effort of the season against a solid Eagles pass defense back in week 7. Unfortunately, we can not envision a repeat of that success in the week 12 rematch being played in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Start/Sit Rankings (Week 10)

*Any additional updates that are necessary will be posted no later than Saturday in the final Week 10 (2009) rankings.

1. Drew Brees
(NO) - @ STL
2. Tom Brady (NE) - @ IND
3. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – vs. DAL Check injury report: feet (probable)
4. Peyton Manning (IND) – vs. NE
5. Brett Favre (MIN) – vs. DET Check injury report: groin, hip (probable)

7. Kurt Warner (ARI) – vs. SEA
8. Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – vs. CIN
9. Phillip Rivers (SD) – vs. PHI
10. Joe Flacco (BAL) - @ CLE
11. Jay Cutler (CHI) - While he managed to throw for over 300 yards for the 2nd straight week on Thursday night against the 49ers, Cutler also managed to negate any fantasy benefit from said yardage by throwing 5 interceptions. C'mon Cutler, you can't even muster up a token TD pass? He is now officially the leading candidate to become the poster child for fantasy football's most unpredictable player. Regardless of the match up, it seems like having Cutler in your starting line up is not much different than playing a game of Russian roulette (figuratively speaking of course).
12. Donovan McNabb (PHI) - @ SD
13. Carson Palmer (CIN) - @ PIT

Fantasy Football QB Start/Sit Rankings (Week 11)

*Any additional updates that are necessary will be posted no later than Saturday in the final Week 11 (2009) rankings.

1. Drew Brees (NO) – There really isn’t much to say here. You have one of the NFL’s most dangerous QB’s facing one of the NFL’s most fantasy friendly pass defenses. Brees should light up the Tampa Bay secondary all day and he is a must start fantasy option for this extremely favorable match up in week 11.

2. Peyton Manning (IND) – It wasn’t long ago that a match up against Baltimore would bring cause for serious concern, even for Peyton Manning owners, but this isn’t your old man’s Ravens and Peyton should handle them with ease. Sure, the Ravens rank a respectable 13th in the NFL in pass defense, but those numbers are a bit padded considering that they have already played the inept Browns twice and a Kansas City passing attack that was led by Brodie Croyle at the time. The fact is, that when the Ravens have faced a capable passing attack this season, they have failed miserably and they will face one of the best the NFL has to offer in week 11. Baltimore losing star LB Terrell Suggs with a knee injury should also help Manning’s cause in this match up. For what it’s worth, Manning threw for 271 yards, 3 TDs and 0 interceptions in a game against them last season.

3. Kurt Warner (ARI) – He can be a bit of a wild card, but Warner has been red hot in his last 2 games and a week 11 match up against the Rams holds promise galore. St. Louis ranks just 26th in the NFL in pass defense and only 3 teams give up more fantasy points to opposing QBs on a weekly basis. That should translate into yet another big week for Warner and the Cardinals high powered passing attack.

4. Tom Brady (NE) – While the Jets were able to hold a rusty Tom Brady to a season low fantasy total back in week 2, we seriously doubt they will be able to put the brakes on this passing attack twice in one season, especially with the game being played in Foxboro this time around. Brady has since returned to elite form and he should benefit greatly by having a healthy Wes Welker in the mix which was not the case back in week 2. There is no question that the Jets have a formidable pass defense, but Brady and Bill Belichick should find a way to pick them apart in week 11.

5. Matt Schaub (HOU) – In week 2, Schaub completely dismantled the Titans pass defense, lighting them up for 357 yards and 4 TDs. Based solely on that, you have to like his chances for another great performance against Tennessee this time around at home. That being said, he has not been at the top of his game of late and the Titans have made significant strides in both their pass rush and pass defense over their last few games. So, if you are expecting Schaub to match his monster week 2 totals against them, you may be in for a bit of a let down. Regardless, we still expect him to put up very solid numbers and he should be penciled into fantasy line ups as a QB1.

6. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – On the one hand, a week 11 match up against a 49er pass defense that ranks 29th in the NFL in passing yards allowed bodes very well for Rodgers. On the other hand, the San Francisco pass defense is actually pretty solid where it counts the most with regard to fantasy as they have only allowed 9 passing TDs all season. There are only 5 teams in the NFL that have allowed fewer. Despite that fact, we have little reason to doubt that Rodgers will have a very productive week 11. After all, he does have the longest streak of multiple TD games of any QB in the league (7 consecutive) and he currently ranks at the top amongst NFL QBs in terms of fantasy production so far this season.

7. Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – He is coming off of his worst fantasy performance of the season in week 10 against the Bengals, but he should make up for it with a very favorable week 11 match up against Kansas City. The Chiefs rank just 24th in pass defense, they have a weak pass rush and rarely intercept passes which is key for Roethlisberger’s success, and they have allowed more pass plays of 40 yards or more than any other defense in the NFL (12) which also bodes well for Big Ben with 3 big play receivers at his disposal. He should rebound nicely with this match up and it is safe to pencil him into week 11 fantasy line ups.

8. Brett Favre (MIN) – He was only able to strike pay dirt once in week 10 against the Lions, but Favre was impressive nonetheless torching them for 344 yards through the air. It just seems like he can do whatever he wants, when he wants, this season. There in lies the problem with regard to his fantasy value. Regardless of the ease or difficulty of his match ups, you just never know when he is going to take it easy and play efficiently or when he is going to blow up with a huge performance. That being said, you have to like Favre’s chances for no less than a solid outing against the Seahawks in week 11. Seattle ranks just 22nd in the NFL against the pass and they may be without both starting CBs for this match up due to concussions. Hopefully, he will be in a greedy mood on Sunday. If so, Favre and fantasy owners alike can expect to reap big benefits from this match up. Check injury report: groin, hip (probable)

9. Donovan McNabb (PHI) – A week 11 match up between an up and down McNabb and a Jekyll and Hyde Chicago pass defense isn’t the easiest to gauge, but our money is on McNabb this week. He is coming off of a huge week 10 performance and in spite of the fact that the Bears rank a solid 8th in the NFL in terms of passing yards allowed, they give up plenty of TDs through the air. In fact, only 10 teams in the league have allowed more fantasy points to opposing QBs than Chicago this season. As sporadic as McNabb can be at times, that alone merits using him as a QB1 in week 11.

10. Phillip Rivers (SD) – In week 11, Rivers will get a much anticipated rematch against a Denver team that has been on the down slide of late. That being said, the Broncos still have one of the better pass defenses in the league and they did an adequate job of limiting Rivers to a mediocre stat line back in week 6. While he should fare better this time around, this is not a fail safe match up for him. He is certainly capable of big production against anyone which qualifies him as a low end QB1 this week, but a talented Denver secondary will not make it easy for him.

11. Tony Romo (DAL) – His numbers have tailed off a bit in the last 2 weeks playing on the road against solid opposition. Romo will face yet another tough test in week 11 against a Washington pass defense that is ranked 1st in the NFL for a reason. That said, you still have to like his chances for success in this match up. Romo has a great track record against the Skins when playing at home over the years and he has been money in his last 2 games at home this season throwing for 567 yards with 6 TDs and no picks. While this match up does have some potential stumbling blocks, the Redskins are not bulletproof against the pass and you should be safe with Romo as your fantasy QB1 this week.

12. Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) – While the Vikings defense does plenty of things well, defending the pass is not one of them and Hasselbeck has the weapons to put up solid numbers against them. Minnesota ranks just 23rd in the NFL in pass defense and they have given up the 8th most fantasy points in the league to opposing QBs so far this season. Hasselbeck isn’t the safest fantasy option, but the match up is favorable enough for serious consideration this week.

13. Eli Manning (NYG) – Sure, he went through a rough patch, but Peyton’s little brother seemed to have regained his poise against San Diego in week 9, he has a great match up at home against a shaky Falcons pass defense and he has had two weeks to rest up and prepare for this game. It may be time to give him another look in week 11.

14. Carson Palmer (CIN) – The last 2 weeks haven’t done any favors for Palmer’s fantasy value and contrary to popular belief, the Oakland pass defense is actually fairly solid. That being said, Palmer is due to rebound and a stout Bengals defense against a terrible Raiders offense should create great field position and scoring opportunities for Palmer in the passing game. Call us crazy, but we like Palmer’s chances with this match up.

15. Jay Cutler (CHI) – As some really old guy once said, “that kid has a million dollar arm and a 2 cent head”. We think that saying suits Cutler perfectly which is kind of ironic when you consider that he attended prestigious Vanderbilt University which is notorious for producing weak armed QBs with high IQs. Regardless, Cutler is a wildcard and you can’t count him out for a big performance against anyone, including Philadelphia in week 11. At the same time, he is not to be trusted against even the weakest of pass defenses. All you can do is roll the dice and pray that Cutler doesn’t throw 5 picks costing you any chance of winning your fantasy match up.

16. Matt Ryan (ATL) - @ NYG
17. David Garrard (JAC) – vs. BUF
18. Joe Flacco (BAL) – vs. IND Check injury report: knee (probable)
19. Alex Smith (SF) - @ GB
20. Vince Young (TEN) - @ HOU
21. Jason Campbell (WAS) - @ DAL
22. Jake Delhomme (CAR) – vs. MIA
23. Matt Stafford (DET) – vs. CLE Check injury report: knee (probable)
24. Marc Bulger (STL) – vs. ARI
25. Ryan Fitzpatrick (BUF) - @ JAC

Fantasy Football Quarterback Start/Sit Rankings (Week 9)

*Any additional updates that are necessary will be posted no later than Saturday in the final Week 9 (2009) rankings.

1. Tom Brady (NE) – With 688 passing yards and 9 TD passes in his last 2 games, it is safe to say that Brady has completely returned to top flight form. He should continue his dominance in week 9 against a very inexperienced Miami secondary that features two rookie starters at CB and another rookie corner in nickel situations. With the extra week to prepare, you can count on Brady to pick apart the Dolphin secondary in week 9.

2. Peyton Manning (IND) – He may have started a new streak of 300 yard passing games in week 8, but he also ended a season long TD streak, failing to find the end zone even once in a close battle with San Francisco. Manning should get back on track in that regard in week 9 against a suspect Houston secondary. The Texans rank mid pack in the NFL in terms of pass defense, but they have yet to face a passing attack quite as potent as the Colts all season and they should be no match for Manning and company. Manning has no less than 2 TD passes in his last 3 games against Houston while averaging 293 passing yards per game in those match ups.

3. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – He seems to get better by the week and he should be exceptional in week 9 against Tampa Bay. While the Bucs rank a respectable 15th in the NFL in pass defense, that ranking is not indicative of how bad this secondary really is. Tampa has given up 16 TDs through the air in just 7 games and the Chiefs are the only team in the league that has given up more pass plays of 40 yards or longer. Rodgers should also benefit from the Packers revamped offensive line this week that will feature the return of OTs Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher from injury. Both players are excellent in pass protection and should provide Rodgers with plenty of time in the pocket for the first time all season. While it is worth noting that Rodgers is suffering from a slight ankle sprain on one foot and a sprained toe on the other, he is not expected to be significantly limited by the injuries. The only fantasy risk is that Coach Mike McCarthy could decide to sit him earlier than usual to prevent further wear and tear, but that is not a certainty and will only happen if they jump out to a big lead. Regardless, Rodgers can do plenty of damage against this defense in just 2 or 3 quarters. He is a must start. Check injury report: foot (probable)

4. Drew Brees (NO) – He could be challenged a bit in week 9 by the Panthers top ranked pass defense, but Brees should easily come out on top in this match up, especially playing at home. The last time he faced Carolina in the Super Dome, Brees threw for 386 yards and 4 TDs. While you probably can’t expect him to match those totals against a much improved Panthers secondary in week 9, Brees should be great and we wouldn’t bet against a big game.

5. Donovan McNabb (PHI) – He was very impressive in week 8 en route to a 240 yard, 3 TD performance against the Giants 3rd ranked pass defense. In fact, it’s safe to say that he hasn’t looked better all season. In week 9, McNabb will face another familiar division rival, the Dallas Cowboys. If McNabb can perform at the same level he did in week 8 and we believe he can, he should easily carve up a suspect Dallas secondary. The Cowboys rank just 22nd in the NFL in pass defense and have been very generous to opposing QBs throughout the season. Consider McNabb a solid QB1 for his Sunday night match up at home.

6. Phillip Rivers (SD) – He has been hit or miss throughout much of the season, but we like his chances for a quality performance in week 9 against the Giants. While the Giants currently rank an impressive 3rd in the NFL in pass defense, they have not exactly been at their best of late giving up 8 TDs through the air in their last 3 games, including 3 TDs just last week to Donovan McNabb. Rivers is coming off of his worst fantasy performance of the season in week 8 against Oakland, but that is not exactly a bad thing as he has a tendency to back up poor performances with solid efforts the following week. Rivers should prove worthy as a QB1 in week 9.

7. Tony Romo (DAL) – He could be in for a stiff challenge in week 9 on the road in Philadelphia, but you still have to like his chances from a fantasy football perspective. Especially when you consider that the Cowboys passing game has been hitting on all cylinders the last few weeks with the emergence of WR Miles Austin. In his last 3 games since Austin has joined the Cowboys starting line up, Romo has thrown for 918 yards, 8 TDs and no interceptions (not too shabby). There is some risk given Romo’s inexplicable roller coaster of a track record against the Eagles over the years, but odds are that this will be one of his better games against them. It should be a shootout.

8. Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) – He should be one of the better fantasy options at the QB position in week 9 with an extremely favorable match up against the Lions. Detroit ranks just 27th in the NFL against the pass and only the Titans give up more fantasy points to opposing QBs than Detroit. The Seahawks are shaky up front in pass protection, but that should not be a major issue and it would not be surprising to see Hasselbeck’s name atop fantasy leader boards at week’s end. Consider him QB1 material with the promising match up at home in week 9. Check injury report: rib (probable)

9. Matt Schaub (HOU) – He is not coming off of one of his better games and a week 9 match up against Indianapolis on the road could prove difficult, especially without star TE Owen Daniels. That said, this match up did get a bit easier as the week has progressed. The Colts announced that they will be without three key members of their secondary in week 9. CBs Kelvin Hayden and Marlin Jackson have knee injuries and star safety Bob Sanders is gone for the season with a torn biceps tendon. This does help Schaub’s fantasy value for this match up and he is a solid QB1 option, but while the Indy secondary is now somewhat inexperienced due to the injuries; they are still fairly stout and this may not be a cakewalk.

10. Jay Cutler (CHI) – He has been a tremendous disappointment in each of his last 2 games and you would not be in the wrong for going in a different direction this week, but we are optimistic that Cutler will get things going again in week 9 against a soft Cardinals pass defense. This is actually an interesting match up because like Cutler, the Arizona secondary loves to gamble and they each get burned on occasion because of it. Cutler will probably throw an interception and maybe even 2, but he should make up for it with a nice yardage total and a couple of trips to the end zone.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Start/Sit Rankings (Week 7)

*Updated QB rankings WITH COMMENTS will be posted on Friday. Any additional updates that are necessary will be posted no later than Saturday in the final week 7 rankings.

1. Peyton Manning (IND) – He has now thrown for 300 plus yards in each of his first 5 games to go along with 12 TD passes. He is coming in fresh off of a bye week and Manning has an extremely favorable match up against the Rams 27th ranked pass defense. What more could you ask for ? Manning is a no brainer for week 7 fantasy rosters.

2. Tom Brady (NE) – 380 passing yards and 6 TD’s in the span of just over 2 quarters and in snowy windy conditions no less, are you kidding? We would not have believed it if we didn’t see it. This is exactly what Brady needed to get on the fast track back to playing top flight football. Fortunately, we fully expect him to continue his stellar play with a very friendly week 7 match up against Tampa Bay across the big pond in London on Sunday. The Bucs rank a respectable 11th in the NFL in passing yards allowed, but that does not tell the whole story as the Tampa secondary is shaky at best. They have allowed 13 passing TD’s in 6 games and they have allowed more pass plays of 40 yards or longer than any other team in the NFL and yes, that does include the Titans. Brady is by far the best signal caller this defense has faced all season and we expect the Pats high powered passing attack to embarrass the Bucs in front of our friends in the UK in week 7 (although not quite to the degree we saw them embarrass the Titans, that is literally impossible to top). Check injury report: shoulder (probable)

3. Drew Brees (NO) – After 2 lackluster performances in a row, Brees bounced back with a monster week 6 against the NFL’s top ranked pass defense. We expect more of the same from him in week 7 against Miami. While Brees has struggled in his 2 previous meetings against AFC East opponents, it should be much different this time around. The Dolphins rank a mediocre 18th in the NFL in pass defense and their secondary is highly susceptible to giving up big plays which bodes well for Brees and the Saints high powered passing attack. Brees is a must start for week 7.

4. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – He has now thrown for over 300 yards in his last 2 games and he has at least 2 TD’s in his last 3 contests. We look for him to continue his successful run with a very favorable week 7 match up against a beat up Browns defense. Cleveland has not only suffered a rash of injuries on defense of late, but several key players are suffering from the flu this week as well. The Browns currently rank 23rd in the NFL in pass defense and they were torched for 417 yards and 2 TD’s just last week. Pass protection continues to be a problem for Rodgers, but it is not a glaring issue against this defense and it should not have much effect on Rodgers week 7 fantasy numbers. Rodgers is a very solid fantasy option. Check injury report: foot (probable)

5. Phillip Rivers (SD) – He was slightly underwhelming in week 6, but considering the opponent, Rivers was not all that bad. He should rebound nicely in week 7 against a very generous Kansas City pass defense. The Chiefs rank 25th in pass defense giving up a hair below 250 passing yards per game. They have also allowed 10 passing TD’s in just 6 games. The last time Rivers faced the Chiefs in Kansas City, he threw for 346 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 interception. In fact, he threw for over 300 yards and 2 TD’s in each of the 2 match ups in which he faced the Chiefs last season. Rivers is a very solid starting option for your week 7 fantasy roster with this match up.

6. Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – He continues to pour it on opposing defenses on a weekly basis and now leads the NFL in passing yards (1,887) and his 12 total TD’s (2 rushing) ranks him among the top 3 scoring QB’s in the league. In week 7, we look for Big Ben to continue the trend against a very shaky Minnesota secondary which is the only chink in the armor of an otherwise solid defense, but it is a glaring weakness none the less. The Vikings are very stingy against the run, so it seems logical that Pittsburgh will lean heavily on the passing game, not that they weren’t going to that anyway based on the ridiculously high number of pass attempts we have already seen from the Steelers this season. Roethlisberger will have to contend with a fierce Vikings pass rush from Jared Allen and company, but all in all, we expect this match up to pay high dividends in terms of fantasy production. Keep him locked in your starting fantasy line up as Roethlisberger is on fire.

7. Matt Schaub (HOU) – Following week 6’s monster performance against Cincinnati, Schaub has now thrown for 300 yards or more in 4 out of the last 5 weeks. He also leads all NFL signal callers with 14 TD’s on the season and ranks a close 2nd in passing yards. He is clearly on fire and we expect him to carry that momentum into a fairly promising match up against the Niners. San Francisco ranks a mediocre 20th in the NFL in pass defense and they were torched by Matt Ryan for 329 yards and 2 TD’s in their last game. The Niners are probably a little better than their ranking and poor effort against Atlanta may suggest, but they are still no match for Schaub and Andre Johnson. Schaub is an excellent option for week 7 fantasy line ups.

8. Eli Manning (NYG) – He struggled a bit in week 6, but it was not completely unexpected and it is certainly no reason to reach for the panic button. It was a tough match up under poor circumstances. In fact, we think he will bounce back nicely in week 7 against Arizona at home on Sunday night. The Cardinals currently rank a very poor 31st in pass defense and they have allowed 9 passing TD’s in just 5 games. Taking into consideration that Arizona ranks 1st in the NFL against the run, we expect a heavy dose of the Giants passing attack and this game could very well turn into a shootout through the air which almost always results in a big fantasy day. We like his chances against this defense a lot barring any hangover from last week. Check injury report: foot (probable)

9. Kurt Warner (ARI) – On paper, a week 7 match up against the Giants top ranked pass defense is not very appealing, but when you consider the beating that the Saints put on them and the fact that the Giants had not previously faced a good passing offense until last week, this match up is not quite as menacing. At the very least, Drew Brees laid out a nice blue print for Warner against this defense. That said, we don’t believe this will be a cakewalk for Warner on the road. The Giants will be out for redemption and they will do their best to make life difficult for him. Warner threw for 351 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception against the G-Men last season. This should be an interesting match up this time around and we expect Warner to put up a solid numbers in spite of the potential for a few hiccups along the way.

10. Matt Ryan (ATL) – He didn’t wow anyone with his week 6 performance, but he did salvage an otherwise lackluster night by throwing 2 TD passes against the Bears. Ryan should fare better in week 7 against a shaky Dallas pass defense. The Cowboys rank just 26th in the NFL in passing yards allowed and they have given up 8 TD’s through the air in 5 games. Considering the sub par level of competition Dallas has faced from the QB position so far this season (Eli Manning being the exception), it is safe to say that they have struggled mightily against the pass. We expect a solid effort from Ryan in week 7.

11. Jay Cutler (CHI) – He had his first 300 yard passing game of the season in week 6 and the prospects of him adding another 300 yard effort in week 7 are actually pretty good. Cutler will face a Bengals defense that has been riddled with injuries of late and it showed as they were shredded for 392 yards and 4 TD’s by Matt Schaub last week. While we seriously doubt Cutler can match Schaub’s numbers, he should be in for a very good afternoon against the ailing Cincinnati defense. Cutler makes for a solid starting option against the Bengals 28th ranked pass defense.

12. Tony Romo (DAL) – Romo’s struggles were well documented through the first quarter of the season, but he seemed to have found an answer for his critics in week 5, thanks in large part to the emergence of playmaking WR Miles Austin. While Austin did play a major role in Romo’s week 5 success, we were more impressed with Romo’s vast improvement in 3 key areas in which he had previously been lacking 1) decision making skills 2) poise 3) and most importantly, his accuracy. Granted, he was playing a weak Chiefs defense, but it was still a huge step in the right direction. Following the bye week, the well rested Romo will face a fairly generous Falcons pass defense at home. There is always a chance he could regress, but we seriously don’t expect that to happen against the Atlanta defense in week 7. Romo still has much to prove and we think he will continue his resurgence with a solid fantasy effort on Sunday . He is serviceable as a low end QB1.

13. Brett Favre (MIN) – He continues to shine and Favre is coming off of his best fantasy performance of the season in week 6 against Baltimore. Unfortunately, things start to get a bit more difficult for him in week 7 when Favre faces his toughest test to date against the Steelers on the road. While Pittsburgh is not quite as bullet proof against the pass as they have been in year’s past, they are still extremely solid and the return of their superstar safety Troy Polamalu only makes them more dangerous. Favre will have his work cut out for him this week, and he looks more like a QB2 than a QB1 with this difficult match up.

14. Donovan McNabb (PHI) – For reasons unknown, McNabb did not look at all sharp in what was thought to be a very favorable week 6 match up against Oakland. Unfortunately, the prospects for a big rebound game in week 7 do not look all that great either. It’s not that McNabb is not capable of having a big game against Washington, but his recent track record against the Skins suggests otherwise. In fact, he did not have a single TD against Washington in 2 games last season and averaged a mediocre 213 passing yards per game. The Skins may struggle in many areas, but pass defense in not one of them as they rank 3rd in the NFL in that respect. They have also allowed just 5 passing TD’s in 6 games. Again, we wouldn’t put it past McNabb to bounce back with a big game. It’s just that history and a poor match up are not on his side.

15. Carson Palmer (CIN) – We wouldn’t go so far as to call him a bust, but it is fair to say that Palmer has vastly underachieved so far this season. He has yet throw for 300 yards through 6 games and Palmer has almost as many interceptions as he does TD passes. Unfortunately, we are not optimistic that he will breakout in week 7 either. While the match up against Chicago is not terrible, Palmer has not shown any sign that he is capable of performing at an elite level and an improving Bears pass defense that ranks 14th in the NFL will likely prove challenging.

16. Matt Cassel (KC) – Cassel’s streak of 3 consecutive games with 2 TD passes came to an abrupt end in week 6 as he was shut out of the end zone against a solid Washington pass defense. He should have better luck getting back to the end zone in week 7 against a San Diego pass defense that has allowed 8 passing TD’s in 5 games. That said, the Chargers are not a pushover and Cassel will likely have his work cut out for him. He is fairly safe to use as a bye week replacement, but don’t expect a major contribution from having him on your fantasy roster.

17. Shaun Hill (SF) – He has a semi-favorable match up in week 7 against a mediocre Houston pass defense and we like the added weapon in Michael Crabtree, but Hill is yet to make a major contribution on a fantasy roster all season and we doubt this will be the first. Hill is serviceable as a decent bye week replacement, but anything more than average production from him should be considered a bonus given his track record to date.

18. Chad Henne (MIA) – He has been impressive and appears to be improving each week. Unfortunately, he is limited by Miami’s expanding use of the “wildcat” package and his match up against New Orleans is far from safe. Henne is not highly recommended for week 7 fantasy use.

19. Mark Sanchez (NYJ) – He has some capable weapons now, but the rookie signal caller seems to be getting worse by the week. Sanchez is not a safe fantasy play against an improving Oakland pass defense that made Donovan McNabb look pretty bad last week.

20. Josh Johnson (TB) – He may have to throw the ball a ton this week playing from behind against New England, but that is about the extent of his fantasy upside in this match up and Johnson is not highly recommended for obvious reasons.

21. Jason Campbell (WAS) – Do you really want a guy that had to be benched against Kansas City quarter backing your fantasy team against Philly’s top 5 pass defense in week 7? We didn’t think so.

22. Derek Anderson (CLE) – He has averaged just 72 passing yards per game in his last 2 starts with just 1 TD and 2 interceptions. A week 7 match up against Green Bay should certainly yield better results than the previous 2 weeks, but that isn’t saying much at all and Anderson can not be trusted as a starting fantasy option. Check injury report: ankle (probable)

23. JaMarcus Russell (OAK) – He wasn’t half bad in week 6 against Philly and the return of WR Chaz Schillens should provide a much needed boost, but Russell’s chances for success against a stout Jets pass defense in week 7 are minimal at best.

24. Marc Bulger (STL) – He basically has nothing to work with and he is facing a Colts pass defense that is one of the best in the NFL. Bulger is not worth consideration for fantasy line ups in week 7.

25. Jake Delhomme (CAR) – The Bills are pretty bad in general, but they do have a very good pass defense and Delhomme just plain sucks as a fantasy QB. He will probably still be throwing interceptions against this defense on Tuesday.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Start/Sit Rankings (Week 4)

1. Peyton Manning (IND) – Let’s see, he has yet to throw for under 300 yards in a game so far this season and he has 6 TD passes in his last 2 games. Yep, we are sure of it. You are going to want to have Manning in your week 4 fantasy line up against an overrated and beat up Seattle pass defense. In true Peyton Manning fashion, he should continue to perform at an unmatched level of consistency.

2. Jay Cutler (CHI) – If you are still concerned with regard to Cutler’s poor week 1 fantasy performance, fear not, the worst appears to be behind him. In fact, Cutler has fared very well over the last two weeks and a week 4 match up against Detroit is extremely favorable. The Lions have allowed no less than 2 passing TD’s in each of there first 3 games while giving up an average of 279 passing yards per game. Look for Cutler to go to the air early and often, especially if Matt Forte continues to struggle with the ground game. He is a great starting option for fantasy rosters in week 4.

3. Drew Brees (NO) – Following a lackluster week 3 fantasy performance against the Bills, the thought of Brees facing a Jets defense that has already shut down the likes of Tom Brady and Matt Schaub doesn’t exactly breed the utmost confidence for week 4. That said, you should probably consider week 3 as more of the exception than the rule and Brees rarely falters at home or in consecutive weeks. Sure, there are much better match ups out there for lesser signal callers in week 4, but it is difficult to justify sitting Brees against anyone, a scary Jets defense included.

4. Tom Brady (NE) – In spite of what looks to be a tough and hard fought week 4 match up against the Ravens, Brady remains a must start fantasy option. The Baltimore pass defense is certainly formidable, but they have also shown signs of vulnerability. Especially in week 2 when they gave up 436 passing yards and 2 TD’s to San Diego QB Phillip Rivers. Hopefully, Wes Welker will be able to return this week which would be a huge boost in the short passing game against the blitz happy Ravens. The match up isn’t ideal, but you can not underestimate Brady at home. Besides, you would have to be insane and off your meds to bench Brady so long as he is healthy.

5. Matt Schaub (HOU) – He was far from golden against the Raiders in 2008 throwing for 255 yards, 0 TD’s and 1 interception, but the same could be said about Schaub’s shaky track record against the Titans coming into 2009 and he ripped them to shreds in week 2. This is a new year and a rejuvenated Matt Schaub. He has been arguably the best fantasy signal caller in the NFL over the last 2 weeks throwing for 657 yards and 7 TD’s and the return of a healthy Kevin Walter only boosts his chances for success. The Raiders do have shut down CB Nnamdi Asomugha to deal with Andre Johnson, but all in all, the Oakland pass defense is mediocre at best and Schaub has plenty of capable weapons to choose from.

6. Phillip Rivers (SD) – While Rivers suffered his most disappointing fantasy effort of 2008 against Pittsburgh, throwing for just 164 yards, 0 TD’s and 2 interceptions, it is fairly safe to say that the circumstances are different this time around. For starters, the Steelers pass defense is looking shaky in comparison to last season, especially with star safety Troy Polamalu out of the line up. On top of that, RB LaDainian Tomlinson is still on the mend and Darren Sproles has struggled in the running game in his stead. In our opinion, the Chargers will have little choice but to turn to Rivers and a pass heavy approach in this match up. This isn’t necessarily a failsafe recipe for success playing on the road in Pittsburgh, but Rivers is throwing the ball well and we like his chances under the circumstances.

7. Eli Manning (NYG) – The odds are certainly in Manning’s favor to continue his run of success in a promising week 4 match up against Kansas City’s 20th ranked pass defense. That said, Manning’s fantasy potential may be limited to some degree if the Giants jump out to a sizeable lead and quickly turn to their potent running attack. At the very least, this match up is extremely safe and he should have a productive week 4.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Start/Sit Rankings (Week 6)

*Updated QB rankings WITH COMMENTS will be posted on Friday. Any additional updates that are necessary will be posted no later than Saturday in the final week 6 rankings.

1. Tom Brady (NE) – While the occasional miscue has kept Brady’s fantasy totals in check for the most part since week 1, we are fairly confident that “Tom Terrific” will return to top flight form this Sunday. A week 6 meeting with Tennessee at home is extremely favorable and easily his best match up so far this season. The Titans currently rank 31st in pass defense and have allowed 13 TD’s through the air in just 5 games. The Tennessee secondary has been shredded by virtually every signal caller they have faced so far this season and we highly doubt that Brady will be the exception in week 6. Start him.

2. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – Despite getting sacked 8 times and turning it over twice against Minnesota, Rodgers still managed to put up excellent numbers in week 4. While pass protection remains a glaring issue for Rodgers, you have to love his chances for a huge performance in week 6 against Detroit. The Lions rank just 27th in pass defense and they have allowed 15 passing TD’s through 5 games. In 2008, Rodgers totaled over 300 yards passing with 3 TD’s and no interceptions in each of his 2 games against them (636 yards and 6 TD’s total to be exact). Rodgers is a top shelf choice for your week 6 fantasy line up.

3. Kurt Warner (ARI) – In spite of the fact that Seattle’s Jekyll and Hyde pass defense ranks a mildly impressive 9th in the NFL, they have only faced two noteworthy QB’s so far this season, Peyton Manning and Jay Cutler. Needless to say, the Seahawk secondary was no match for either and they were throttled by each. This is exactly why we are extremely optimistic that a similarly capable Kurt Warner will do the same to them in week 6. Well, that, and the fact that Warner has a solid track record of lighting them up anyway. In 2 games against Seattle last season, Warner threw for a combined 658 yards and 5 TD’s. He is a must start fantasy option for week 6.

4. Donovan McNabb (PHI) – He not only appeared healthy in week 5, but he was dominant en route to a 3 TD performance against Tampa Bay. While week 6 is not quite as favorable, similar results are likely against a middle of the road Raiders pass defense that appears to be on the downward slide. McNabb has all the tools and components at his disposal to embarrass the Oakland defense and we believe that is exactly what will happen. He makes for a solid selection as a QB1 for your week 6 fantasy roster. Check injury report: rib (probable)

5. Drew Brees (NO) – A battle of goliaths will ensue in week 6 as the NFL’s most highly touted fantasy QB heading into 2009 will face off against the NFL’s best pass defense. While you can never count Brees out at home, we have some serious concerns regarding this match up. The Giants are allowing just over 100 passing yards per game and have accumulated more interceptions than they have allowed TD passes. The G-Men also possess one of the NFL’s better pass rushes that has accounted for 14 sacks in just 5 games. Normally, we are optimistic that Brees can torch any defense he faces at home, but it is difficult not to be skeptical considering the opponent and the fact that Brees hasn’t thrown a single TD pass or even thrown for over 200 yards since week 2. Regardless, the only way you sit Brees is if you have an overwhelmingly favorable match up with your back up.

6. Matt Hasselbeck (SEA) – He was able to fight through the pain of a broken rib in week 5 en route to a monster 4 TD performance against a poor Jacksonville pass defense. He will likely have to cope with the pain again in week 6, but luckily, the match up against Arizona is equally promising. The Cardinals currently rank dead last in the NFL in pass defense giving up over 300 yards per game. Hasselbeck will carry a ton of momentum into this game and we really like his chances for yet another big week, but we must warn you that he was terrible against Arizona last season and the Cardinals pass defense was equally poor in 2008. Check injury report: rib (probable)

7. Phillip Rivers (SD) – While there is no question that Denver’s pass defense is much improved over a season ago, we still like Rivers’ chances in this match up. He has an extremely good track record against the Broncos and he has had an extra week to prepare coming in fresh off of a bye week. This game also has a history of turning into a shootout which favors Rivers. He will be challenged, but the odds are in his favor at home on Monday night. Rivers should be able to continue his successful fantasy run with yet another solid performance in week 6.

8. Matt Schaub (HOU) – He has now thrown for 300 yards or more in three of his five starts this season. While that is very impressive, it must be taken with a grain of salt considering that the three performances in question came against the three worst pass defenses in the NFL (ARI, TEN, and JAC). Regardless, Schaub is having a great season overall and he should be solid once again in week 6 against Cincy. The Bengals rank just 23rd in the NFL in pass defense, but they have only allowed 1 passing TD per game on average. For what it is worth, Schaub threw for 280 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 interceptions in a game against them in 2008.

9. Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – With every passing week (no pun intended), Roethlisberger continues to top his fantasy output from the previous week. While that could happen again in week 6, it is not very likely. Roethlisberger should be very solid, but a match up against the Browns isn’t quite as favorable as you might think. Cleveland currently ranks 10th in the NFL against the pass and they have allowed just 5 passing TD’s in 5 games. Granted, that ranking is a bit misleading considering that most teams choose to lean heavily on the ground game against a terrible Browns run defense, but the Steelers are not likely to break that trend. As a result, Roethlisberger’s pass attempts may be down some this week which in turn could limit his production a tad. Regardless, he is on a hot streak and qualifies as a QB1 for week 6.

10. Matt Ryan (ATL) – Unexpectedly, he is coming off of his best fantasy effort of the season against what appeared to be a very solid 49er pass defense. Hopefully, Ryan can keep that momentum rolling into a week 6 match up against Chicago. While the Bears rank a mediocre 20th in the NFL in terms of passing yards allowed, they have been fairly stingy with regard to passing TD’s allowed, giving up just 4 in 4 games. Week 6 may not be a cakewalk for Ryan, but we like his chances at home coming off of a big week 5. As a side note, Ryan threw for 301 yards and a 1 TD against the Bears last season.

11. Jay Cutler (CHI) – He has yet to reach the magical 300 yard passing mark this season, but Cutler has played very well since his week 1 debacle. In his last 3 games, he has thrown 7 TD passes while being intercepted just one time. He should be able to keep that success going into a week 6 match up against Atlanta. The Falcons young secondary has been suspect to this point with regard to passing yards allowed en route to a ranking of 22nd in the NFL, but they are tied for 2nd in the NFL in passing TD’s allowed have given up only 3 so far this season. As you can see this match up has its pros and cons, but Cutler should play well enough to qualify as a low end QB1 for week 6.

12. David Garrard (JAC) – We realize that he stunk it up last week, but in his defense, he was without his best receiver, Mike Sims-Walker, who was a last second scratch (funny story actually). We are also going to take it upon ourselves to pose the excuse of jet lag on Garrard’s behalf. That said, we are confident that he will rebound in week 6 and this is why. For starters, Garrard is facing a very poor Rams pass defense. Secondly and most importantly, the game is being played in Jacksonville. Garrard has played lights out at home so far this season throwing for 605 yards and 5 TD’s in 2 games. Last, but certainly not least, big play receiver Mike Sims-Walker will be back for this match up barring any further late night activities with the ladies. We aren’t saying Garrard is going to have a monster game or anything, but he should bounce back with a solid effort in week 6.

13. Brett Favre (MIN) – The Ravens are still one of the best defenses in the NFL when it comes to stopping the run, but there is success to be had against this defense through the air. Surprisingly, Baltimore has been one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL so far this season ranking just 26th in terms of passing yards allowed. They are still a bit stingy with regard to giving up TD’s through the air, but they are not completely bullet proof in that respect either giving up 6 passing TD’s in 5 games. This isn’t the best match up Favre will face this season, but is favorable and he should put up quality numbers in this game.

14. Carson Palmer (CIN) – He isn’t on pace to break any passing records this season, but Palmer has been adequate to this point and he is certainly capable of much more. He will face a middle of the road Houston pass defense in week 6. In other words, this isn’t the best of match ups for him, but it could be far worse. While Palmer probably isn’t QB1 material this week, he definitely makes the grade as a high end QB2 or bye week replacement. Check injury report: thumb (probable)

15. Eli Manning (NYG) – In spite of his foot injury, Eli continued his impressive ’09 fantasy campaign in week 5 throwing for 2 TD’s in limited action against the Raiders. Unfortunately, we aren’t all that optimistic about his chances to continue his successful streak in week 6. The Saints pass defense has been a nightmare for opposing QB’s this season as they are tied for 2nd in the NFL having only allowed just 3 TD passes. They also rank 1st in the NFL with 10 interceptions in 4 games. We love what Manning has been able to do so far this season and solid numbers are not out of the question once again, but he looks more like a QB2 than a QB1 with this tough match up on the road. Check injury report: foot (probable)

16. Kyle Orton (DEN) – He continues to play well and he is coming off of his best fantasy performance of the season against a pretty good New England pass defense. In week 6, Orton will face a much improved, but vulnerable Chargers pass defense. San Diego ranks 12th in the NFL against the pass and has allowed 6TD’s through the air in 4 games. Orton should play well, but we anticipate a heavy dose of the ground attack from the Broncos against a very weak Chargers run defense which could limit Orton’s fantasy potential a bit. That said, he is still serviceable as a quality QB2 or bye week fill in this week.

17. Joe Flacco (BAL) – While he is coming off of his worst game of the season, that is not the reason for his abnormally low ranking this week. It is simply a product of other QB’s having better match ups. Not that Flacco’s week 6 match up is terrible against a mediocre Minnesota secondary, but it does have some drawbacks. One of which is a fierce Vikings pass rush. Minnesota leads the NFL in sacks and Flacco can get rattled under pressure on the road. He should be adequate as a QB2 or bye week replacement under the circumstances.

18. Jason Campbell (WAS) – Once again, Campbell is looking at a favorable match up in week 6 against the Chiefs. Kansas City ranks near the bottom of the pack in the NFL in pass defense and they have already given up 10 TD’s through the air in just 5 games. Regardless, Campbell is still a mediocre fantasy QB and that is being generous, but due to the cozy match up, he is serviceable as a decent bye week fill in.

19. Matt Cassel (KC) – At first glance, a match up against Washington’s 3rd ranked pass defense looks anything but appealing, but considering the Skins have played the 4 worst passing teams in the NFL in their first 5 games (STL, TB, CAR and DET) that ranking is a bit misleading. On top of that, Cassel has played pretty well of late throwing for 2 TD’s in each of his last 3 games. We aren’t saying he is going to light it up by any means and the Skins still present a solid challenge, but Cassel is not nearly as poor of a fantasy option as one might think and he could be used as a bye week replacement.

20. Jake Delhomme (CAR) – The only reason you should even consider using Delhomme this week is because he is facing a pass defense that has been every bit as bad as he has to this point. Tampa Bay has already given up 12 passing TD’s in 5 games. Even Delhomme should be able to find pay dirt against them at least once, but we still don’t trust him as anything more than a low end QB2 for week 6.

21. Mark Sanchez (NYJ) – He does have Braylon Edwards now which bodes well, but Cotchery is out this week with a hamstring injury and Sanchez has not played good football of late. He is also facing a Bills pass defense that ranks 6th in the NFL. There are worse options out there, but Sanchez is not a great fantasy play for week 6.

22. Daunte Culpepper (DET) – He appears likely to start again in week 6 in relief of the injured Matt Stafford and Culpepper actually play fairly well last week, but he will have trouble without Calvin Johnson in the line up.

23. Marc Bulger (STL) – He should have his best week of the season against a terrible Jacksonville pass defense, but that isn’t saying much considering his numbers to date and you still can’t trust Bulger or this offense against anyone. Bulger is not highly recommended in spite of the promising match up.

24. Kerry Collins (TEN) – Once again Collins will likely have to throw the ball a ton coming from behind, but the Titans passing game is sputtering and the a week 6 match up at New England is not very favorable. We suggest you steer clear.

25. Josh Johnson (TB) – He is showing improvement and we like that he is dangerous as a running threat, but Johnson is still miles away from being a trustworthy fantasy option and a match up against Carolina’s 2nd ranked pass defense in week 6 is clearly not favorable.

Fantasy Football Quarterback Start/Sit Rankings (Week 3)

Here they are—Quarterback Rankings for Week 3 to help you decide who to start and who to sit on your fantasy football team.

1. Drew Brees (NO) – Needless to say, we like his chances against any defense, but a week 3 meeting with Buffalo is especially favorable. In their first 2 games, the Bills defense has given up 5 passing TD’s and 664 passing yards. We see no reason why Brees should not shred this secondary en route to another huge fantasy performance. There is some concern about the potential weather conditions for this game, but we doubt even a hurricane could slow down this passing attack. Check injury report: shoulder (full practice: probable)

2. Peyton Manning (IND) – In spite of the fact that the Colts offense was only on the field for less than fifteen minutes, Manning still managed to throw for over 300 yards and 2 scores against the Dolphins on Monday night. He has the potential to be even better in week 3 against a fairly generous Cardinals pass defense. As usual, Manning is a must start fantasy option.

3. Aaron Rodgers (GB) – He has yet to meet his lofty expectations to this point mostly due to poor pass protection that has led to him getting sacked 10 times in 2 games. The good news is that a week 3 meeting with St. Louis provides a very favorable opportunity to get things headed in the right direction. It is safe to say that the Rams present Rodgers with his best match up to date as they field one of the worst defenses in the NFL and with just 1 team sack to their credit so far, they present little challenge in the form of a pass rush. Greg Jennings should also be healthier this week which goes a long way in boosting Rodgers’ fantasy impact. If Rodgers can’t get it done against the Rams, it could be time to worry, but we are more than optimistic about his chances.

4. Tom Brady (NE) – Sure, he was shaky on Sunday and he may be a little further behind than we anticipated, but we believe Brady’s poor play in week 2 was more a result of a great Jets defense than his own shortcomings. Just look at what the Jets did to Houston QB Matt Schaub in week 1 and then look at Schaub’s numbers in week 2. You probably can’t expect him to rebound like Schaub, but we would be very surprised if Brady does not respond with more than a solid performance. He will face a young, middle of the road Falcons pass defense in week 3. Atlanta has yet to face a QB anywhere near Brady’s caliber this season.

5. Phillip Rivers (SD) – Week 2 had its down moments for Rivers, but all in all, it was a big fantasy effort with 436 passing yards and 2 TD’s against one of the best defenses the NFL has to offer (Baltimore). He should carry that momentum into week 3 against a young and demoralized Miami pass defense at home. Rivers only managed pedestrian like numbers against Miami in 2008, but the circumstances are much different this time around. The Dolphins have already allowed 8 pass plays of 20 yards or more and 3 pass plays of 40 yards or more. This bodes well for the Chargers who often find pay dirt on big plays through the air. You should have Rivers in your fantasy line up with confidence.

6. Matt Schaub (HOU) – The season is still young, but at least we can now take comfort in knowing that Schaub isn’t likely to be a bust after rebounding in a big way from a terrible week 1. In fact, we have a great deal of confidence in him heading into a week 3 match up with Jacksonville. Schaub’s best fantasy effort of 2008 came against the Jaguars and Jacksonville’s secondary has been shaky at best through the first 2 weeks of 2009. A confident Matt Schaub is back on track as a quality QB1 for week 3.

7. Kurt Warner (ARI) – While his fantasy numbers were not through the roof, Warner was near flawless from an efficiency standpoint in week 2. Efficiency and big fantasy numbers could prove more difficult to come by in week 3 against a Colts pass defense that is only giving up 139 yards per game and has yet to allow a single passing TD through 2 games. That said, Warner is by far the best QB Indianapolis has faced to date and our hope is that this game turns into a shootout through the air. Our fear, however, is that the Cardinals abandon their normal pass happy approach in favor of the ground game against a weak Colts run defense. This is a difficult match up, but you can never underestimate Warner’s fantasy potential with the best group of WR’s in the league at his disposal. Check injury report: shoulder (full practice: probable)

8. Tony Romo (DAL) – We are being kind in saying that Romo flat out stunk it up against the Giants last Sunday night. Maybe the pressure of playing the first game in the new stadium got to him, but it did come as a surprise against a team that he had previously had a great deal of success against. Romo will look to bounce back in week 3 against Carolina. On paper, the Panthers pass defense looks pretty good, allowing just 151 passing yards per game, but that is more than misleading considering their week 1 opponent (Philadelphia) barely threw the ball against them after opening up a huge lead early in that contest. The more telling statistic is the 5 TD’s Carolina has allowed through the air. Romo has a history of strong performances in Monday night games and he should rebound against a shaky Panther pass defense, but his decision making must improve.

9. Matt Ryan (ATL) – With 5 TD passes and just 1 interception through the first 2 weeks, Matt Ryan is clearly proving that he is more than just an efficient passer. He truly belongs among the NFL’s better fantasy QB’s. In week 3, Ryan will face off against a good, but not great, New England pass defense. While Bill Belichick’s game plan is likely to create a few stumbling blocks for the second year signal caller, Ryan should come out on top in this match up. He is easily the best QB that New England has faced so far this season and Ryan should be a solid fantasy play for week 3.

10. Eli Manning (NYG) – Throughout his career, Eli Manning has notoriously played the role of serviceable bye week fill in or spot starter in fantasy circles. While he still has a ways to go to be granted elite status, he could be on the brink of transcending into a solid week to week fantasy option. For the first time ever, Manning appears to have a wide selection of quality targets to choose from in his arsenal which could yield positive results on a consistent basis. At the very least, Manning’s fantasy stock is on the rise and as long as opposing defenses continue to focus on stopping Brandon Jacobs and ignore the Giants emerging passing game, it should continue to rise, but keep in mind, the Giants will likely maintain their run first philosophy which will limit him at times. With all of that being said, we do expect Manning to keep the momentum rolling into a favorable week 3 match up against a shaky Tampa Bay pass defense that has been more than generous through the first 2 weeks of the season.

11. Trent Edwards (BUF) – So far, so good for Edwards through the first 2 weeks and there is a decent chance that week 3 could be his best of the season so far. If the Saints high powered offense manages to jump out to a significant lead, as they are more than capable of doing in this match up, Edwards will be forced into throwing the ball a ton to play catch up. As you probably already know, this is a formula that can lead to big fantasy production. Edwards big play threats, Terrell Owens and Lee Evans, will have to step up this week to make it happen, but it isn’t at all unlikely against a suspect Saints secondary.

12. Jay Cutler (CHI) – What a difference a week can make. Following an embarrassing 4 interception performance in week 1, who would have guessed heading into a match up against the Steelers that Cutler would emerge as a fantasy contender once again? Other than his mother, probably no one. The fact of the matter is, he has done just that. Cutler was clearly on the same page with his receivers this past week and he may have found his big play guy in rookie receiver Johnny Knox. Cutler will look for continued success in a week 3 meeting with the Seahawks. Surprisingly, Seattle heads into week 3 with the 2nd ranked pass defense in the NFL having allowed just 293 passing yards and 0 passing TD’s through 2 games. As impressive as that may sound, it loses a fair amount of luster when you consider that Marc Bulger and Shaun Hill were the opposing signal callers in those 2 games. Cutler is a decent fantasy play for week 3, but we expect the Bears to focus more on the running game this week against a Seattle run defense that was blasted by Frank Gore for 207 yards and 2 TD’s in week 2.

13. Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) – Overall, Big Ben has enjoyed a pretty solid track record against week 3 opponent Cincinnati throughout his career. Nothing flashy, but consistently solid. He should continue the trend against a middle of the road Bengals pass defense this time around. Our only concern is a shaky Steelers offensive line going up against a much improved Bengals pass rush. Cincinnati currently leads the NFL with 9 sacks and they absolutely terrorized Aaron Rodgers in week 2.

14. David Garrard (JAC) – Due to his hit or miss nature as a fantasy prospect, Garrard is rarely a guy you can feel completely comfortable with in your starting line up. That holds true for week 3 as well. The match up against Houston is somewhat favorable as the Texans secondary has proven vulnerable against opposing passing games through the first 2 weeks. We also like the fact that Garrard has a potential deep threat in Mike Sims-Walker. That said, Garrard has a fairly average track record against Houston and he is too unpredictable to garner a huge vote of confidence.

15. Carson Palmer (CIN) – He is one of the tougher fantasy QB options to read heading into week 3. Following a lackluster performance against Denver in week 1, Palmer managed to throw for 3 TD’s and rush for another against what looked to be a very stout Green Bay defense, especially in the red zone. In turn, his week 3 opponent, Pittsburgh, was less than impressive against Jay Cutler who was coming off of a terrible performance against Green Bay. We apologize if this sounds like a riddle of sorts, but in reality, it kind of is. We do like the fact that Palmer is coming off of a good outing from a fantasy standpoint, but it was far from a mistake free performance. It is also favorable that the Steelers haven’t looked like themselves without Troy Polamalu. Bottom line, this is a tough match up to gauge, but we feel more comfortable listing Palmer as a QB2 this week.

16. Jason Campbell (WAS) – Once again, Campbell finds himself staring down a very favorable match up against Detroit. As we stated last week, Campbell rarely puts up big time fantasy numbers even against weak opposition, which held true against a soft St. Louis defense in week 2. However, in all fairness, Campbell has performed pretty well against Detroit in each of the last 2 seasons, but again, nothing spectacular. He probably can’t hurt you with this match up, but he hasn’t given anyone reason to have faith in him. If healthy, he has value as a QB2, but he is nursing a sprained ankle, so that makes him even less desirable. Check injury report: foot

17. Mark Sanchez (NYJ) – The rookie signal caller has a shot at his best fantasy week yet, even though that isn’t saying much. He will face a Titans defense that has been surprisingly terrible at defending the pass so far this season. Tennessee ranks dead last in the NFL in pass defense having allowed 678 yards through the air in 2 games. Considering that the Titans still possess one of the best run defenses in the NFL, we anticipate the Jets will open up the passing game against them this week. Even so, Sanchez has yet to make much noise in the fantasy realm, he is still a rookie and the Titans are still dangerous. This match up holds some promise, but it is not without risk.

18. Joe Flacco (BAL) – Flacco is showing consistent value as a fantasy starter and is on track to exceed preseason expectations. While we like his chances to continue his quality play in week 3, there are a couple of issues that concern us with this match up. For starters, the Browns actually have one of the better secondaries in the NFL, contrary to popular belief. Even last season, Cleveland ranked in the top half of the league in pass defense and their 23 interceptions ranked 2nd best in the NFL. Unfortunately, that isn’t our biggest concern as Flacco can overcome the match up. Our real concern here is that the Ravens will jump out to a big lead against a shaky Browns offense and abandon the passing attack. This is probable and would severely cripple any chance Flacco might have at a big fantasy performance.

19. Brett Favre (MIN) –After years of watching Favre play with an effective reckless abandon, it is strange to see him play the role of “game management” QB. So far, he has flourished in that role for the Vikings, but that style of play does not translate well into fantasy football. At some point, Favre may feel comfortable enough in this offense to return to the “loose cannon” style that led to so many huge fantasy efforts in the past, but for now, we don’t see it happening. He should continue to play efficiently in week 3 against a solid 49ers defense and that isn’t likely to make a big impact on fantasy stat sheets.

20. Kyle Orton (DEN) – He hasn’t been bad through the first 2 weeks, but he isn’t exactly lighting it up either. Orton will likely get there, but he still has some work to do to get on the same page with his supporting cast and he has yet to look completely comfortable in Denver’s offensive scheme. He is not ready to make a significant impact as a fantasy option and he may have his work cut out for him against a solid Oakland secondary in week 3. That said, we do expect Orton’s fantasy stock to improve to some degree as the season progresses.

21. Kevin Kolb (PHI) – Kolb’s lofty numbers in week 2 may be a bit misleading being a result of having to throw the ball early and often playing from behind against the Saints. The 3 ugly interceptions he threw were also unsettling, but it is still difficult to ignore a day that included 391 passing yards and 2 TD’s. He isn’t an ideal fantasy option for week 3 for a number of reasons, but he could have some sleeper value against a mediocre Chiefs pass defense at home.

22. Chad Pennington (MIA) – He may be limited by missing a lot of plays when Miami runs their “Wildcat” package and Pennington’s conservative nature doesn’t do fantasy owners any favors either. There could be some big plays to be had against a suspect Chargers secondary in week 3, but he typically puts up average fantasy numbers at best and does not come highly recommended.

23. Byron Leftwich (TB) – He doesn’t make for an ideal fantasy QB, but considering that Tampa is likely to continue to have to throw the ball a ton this season playing from behind, Leftwich will put up some quality numbers from time to time. That said, week 3 against a potent Giants defense may not be the best match up to test that theory.

24. Matt Cassel (KC) – He may be playing for his job and that alone can sometimes bring out the best in a player from a fantasy standpoint, but we would like his chances much more against a softer defense. He is a very risky start on the road against the Eagles. Check injury report: knee.

25. Kerry Collins (TEN) – He could dink and dunk his way to decent numbers in week 3, but it’s a long shot against a Jets defense that has already embarrassed two of the best QB’s in the NFL. His best shot at production will be with the short passing game.
